Facebook – too reliant on existing network and slow to build audience. Also FB is horrible.
X – Nope too addictive and slow to build a following. Bulk of following is low quality or looking for something from you in return.
Reddit – Doesn’t focus enough on long-form content. Also tendency towards hyper-critical mean people with lots of negative crap.
YouTube – Too much work and investment for too little payoff. I’d have to learn all kinds of video skills (or buy them). Pass.
Mastodon – Very focused on activism and political discussion. Hard to find any kind of meaningful content outside of a few writers I found on a small instance. It’s also hard for average user to wrap their head around because of the @server@username convention. Really its for nerdy, tech-inclined, left wing sorts.
BlueSky – Jack Dorsey Mastodon. No thanks.
Instagram – Too visually focused. Not a lot of professional opportunities there.
TikTok – Visual focus, short-form, no chance to show off anything substantial and would require huge time investment to be useful.
